Daniel Gould to Jim Driscoll

Hi JD;

I just read an interesting article in today's, Sunday, www.washingtonpost.com about the new "superstar"  Bryce Harper. For some reason I could not email it to you directly. The title is, "Bryce Harper's swing of beauty,"  by Adam Kilgor. There is also a video and a schematic illustration of his batting swing. Perhaps you can pick up a few tips to pass on to the grandkids. Scroll down, from the top, and look to the left column.

...Oh, yeah, Rizzo was 3 for 5 on Saturday and is now batting .288.

The season may be getting interesting....

Sincerely;

Dan

The only "interesting" part of this season for you....and for me
(sadly) is to determine which of our teams will have the better
upside-down record, now that we're both 14 and 22.

Give it up, Dan, the Cubs are going nowhere.

And...yes... Bryce Harper IS a good one.

Hi JD;

The Cubs beat the Nats 2 to 1 yesterday. Great pitching by Feldman though he didn't get the win.

Hey Scoop;

C-man is hot...But just how hot?  You have left out his cumulative
batting average.

Hi JD;

...And this young pitcher Wood pitched a two hitter against Colorado, Monday,  and the closer gave up the lone run by the Rockies...

Castro and Rizzo both at .280. The rest of the team is beginning to hit except for Barney...But give him time...

"HOT" implies he's hitting great right now, but, maybe not always.

In this case, however, he's 20 for 37 for the season....about .540.

Great little kid, and a real character. >>>>>>>> JD

 Hi JD;

The Cubbies lost on Tuesday...Hey, they had a three game winning streak on the line and were going for four.

...And, again, things DO look good. The young pitchers who have poor win-loss records look superb when you see their ERA: Travis Wood at 2.03 ERA and Scott Feldman 2.53 ERA.

Hitting? Barney went 3 for 4. Hopefully this means he is over the slump...Schierholtz, OF, @ .299 ; W. Castillo, C, @ .288; De Jesus, OF @ .281 with Castro @ .277; and the old man, Soriano @ 271; Rizzo @ 275. And all three have 10 doubles...

Of course, the real mystery is with your Angels...I mean Pujoils, Hamilton and Trout...Weird!

But the big news is that the family that recently bought the Cubs made a threat to move them to a Chicago suburb if they don't get their way concerning certain Chicago zoning regulations, etc.

Sincerely;

Dan

Hi JD;

Hmmmm...what is the Cubbies record at this point of the season which is 1/3 history? Something like 20 wins and 30 losses. Actually, I think it is slightly better now after they took three straight from cross town rivals, the White Soxs.

Am I still optimistic? Even more so. Look at the facts...Oppps, that's not one of your strengths...but I digress...

Pitching: This guy Travis Wood hit a grand slam yesterday and won the game. He is 5-3 with a 2.75 ERA. In the last game he went 6 innings giving up five hits and got 6 SOs.

Feldman is 5-4 with a 2.82 ERA; and Samardzija is 3-6 with a 2.85 ERA and 80 SOs in 72 innings.

Rizzo, a second year player said in reference to Woods 4-bagger and the pitchers in general, "I don't like it, to be honest. They're embarrassing us."  Well, there's that. In fact, the Cubs' pitcher now have 19 ribbies in the month of May. A National League record for most RBIs in a calendar month. "The 1940 Tigers who played without a designated hitter [at the time] hold the MBL' mark with 20 RBIs."

I do expect the hitting to get into sync eventually. I just hope it isn't September when it finally happens.

Color me optimistic and with no apologies.

Sincerely;

Dan

CUBS STILL STINK....FILM AT 11...

YOUR looking at the facts and coming to your conclusion about the
Cubs.....is just like your looking at the socio-political facts and coming
to those pertinent conclusions.
Ever think of that???...................JD

Hi JD;

The Cubs have won five in a row...And another grand slam was hit. Two in two days. Great pitching performance.

As to your other contention...Well, yes, I do think about such things when I am reviewing "facts"  concerning socio-political issues. And it is important to do so basically because most "facts" concerning contemporary issues are reported "facts"  which may or may not be the truth. Georgie-Porgies WMD comes to mind. He reported that "facts"  said that Hussein had WMD. He ignored other "facts," established by the CIA, that indicated it was not so.

When there was still an USSR, Pravda was the paper of record. However, I read and was told that you had to know how to read between the lines to understand what was or what wasn't true. Oh, yeah, Pravda translates into English as "truth."

But the point is: Baseball and politics are both games. The big difference is that politics is more high stake and often played by amateurs. To make the big time in baseball you have to know how to play the game. And even the most compelling facts on paper, for a team,  can mean nothing if the team doesn't gel. Look at the Dodgers. On paper: A powerhouse. On the playing field: A big disappointment.

Go Cubbies;

Dan
