Going back in time: Daniel Gould’s 3D List, Art in Amsterdam #16

Well, trial and error. 3D keeps trying to get this "blogspot" looking presentable. He is now being given lessons and instructions. What to expect? Hmmm. The next phase will be to make your visit to the list a visually exciting one. That sounds reasonable for a site that is dedicated to presenting the Amsterdam' art scene. It will be a learning prossess, so please give the evolution a chance and see where it goes.

Last week was fun. There was much that was good to see and one gallery had six red dots...And that ain't bad! What isn't good is the fact it was only ONE gallery. Common...dig deep into your pockets and come up with a little scratch and spend, SPEND, SPEND! 3D can't make it any plainer.

INDEX:

Bits & Pieces
What You Missed Last Week:
What Is Happening This Week:

BITS & PIECES:

...And things keep a-changing...to paraphrase Bob Dylan. For the time being there will be NO photos. Ooops...3D misspoke as you can clearly see as you scroll down. A fellow American, Cappy Jack, came to the recuse two ways. He gave me lessons and provided me with a UBS stick so I could DO photos. Great! Let's see what I can do with it all.

Also, I have had complaints. The two that 3D takes to heart and wishes he could do something about is the fact that with the "blogspot" the reader CANNOT click-on to the web-site address. Well, other people tell me that they can. This leaves 3D confused and at a loss for words. Hmmm. Now, that's rare. The other is  that you CAN'T make copies. These two problems could be solved  if 3D had his own web-site, but that cost money: setting it up and maintaining it. I'll work on it.

Another personal aside is that the series on "What Is Happiness," authored by yours truly, is now available to be read in Dutch at: http://www.damespraatjes.nl/ . They will appear weekly.

From curiousity, 3D went by Serieuze Zaken Studioos to check out the "The Garage Sale: The First and the Last." Rob Malasch, when asked about sales said, "Fantastic!" Indeed, all the records had been sold; and nearly all the books. Those that were left were catalogs where there had been multiple copies. The walls of the space were still filled, but the stacks that had lined the walls, at the opening, were no longer. When I asked if this would still be the last "Garage Sale?" he answered, "Yes," but then the gnome smiled and said, "But you never know." A few nice pieces are still left and at up to 50% off. A New York couple flew in especially for the sale and bought four works. Hey, for Amsterdamers' it is just around the corner. But hurry! Until the beginning of April.

WHAT YOU MISSED LAST WEEK:

Wednesday:

The Melkweg is presenting a retrospective of the film work of Klaus Kinski. And there is a nice twist. The Melkweg Galerie (Marnixstrat 409, enter at Cafe Eat @ Jo's) is simultaneously offering an exhibition of photographs by Beat Presser (Swiss) who worked on five or six films for Werner Herzog in various capacities. One of which was to photographically record the making of the films. He was on the set of the legendary "Fitzcarraldo" during the second phase of its shooting. Nearly all the photos on display feature Kinski and all are in glorious b/w. Some are formal poses; some are shot surreptitiously; and some capture the action of a particular scene. The latter would be described as motion photography. The two programs run concurrently until 31st March but you can still see the photos, in the gallery, until 4th April. https://bit.ly/2uWvU69,     https://bit.ly/2JMLWEO
***

Friday:

At the Chellerie (Raamgracht 58) is the photograph group "ONZE//11." And nearly everything is in b/w. Rick Boon (http://www.rickboon.eu/) is a minimalist even though one photo has several hundred ducks. So, how can he be "minimal?" Well, he has a style that does the trick. His photo of three sheep is a beautiful study in b/w contrast...Hylke Schoot (http://www.hylkeschoot.com/) shoots photos that are nearly irrelevant because of the way they are displayed. There are nine boxes measuring 40x40x40 cms., and each filled with water. The photos are at the bottom...Henk Hoogland (https://bit.ly/2uVYm8e) hangs three exceptional pieces and all are out of focus. They are landscapes---in color---and while there is nothing remarkable about the scenes themselves the way the photographer uses light and the way he focuses---e.g. out-of-focuses---makes the work stand out...Eduard Evenblij (http://www.mijnbeeld.nl/)  takes several photographs of a building then creates a large collage which sort of reconfigures it in an unusual and weird way. Show for one week only.

Motive Gallery (NDSM-werf, Ms. van Riemsdijkweg 41a) is back. The space is large. But it does not have a eight meter high ceiling as 3D had been told. What it does have is four meter high walls and an A-frame roof with an apex that is eight meters from the floor. The inaugural show was unusual. It was a study in conceptual minimalism. All the walls were bare except for the white paint. In the gallery, your attention went immediately to four speakers on the floor. From them came unusual and erratic sounds. There was an "island" configuration behind the speakers. When you entered it there was a flat screen video with text. Around another corner there was another speaker and, again, the sounds were erratic. The press release said, "Dominique Petitgand's installations, Proche trés proche plays upon an essential characteristic of sound: its permeability. Depending on where you stand, the different sound sources are layered with more or less insistence..." And that was it.  3D then noticed people going through a door, in the wall, and thought, "Ah, there is more to the exhibition." Wrong! This is indeed a second space of the gallery an nearly as large as the first, but what had attracted the crowd was that the room had the bar with  the beer and wine.  Until 8th May http://www.motivegallery.nl/

At Zijll Langhout Exposities (Brouwersgracht 161) is a show for the African artist Papa Adama who is popping up everywhere with exhibitions. 3D refers to him as an African artist, but there is more to it then that. He is ever so slowly morphing into a Dutch one by taking elements from his roots and applying them to the avant garde that he experienced at the Rietveld Academie---which redirected him---and the Rijksacademie---that reinvented him. Add all this influence to his own sensibilities of being an artist looking to be redefined, retouched and reintroduced and you have someone who is still seeking his voice. But there are certain elements that will always dominate his work. One aspect that hasn't changed is his metal sculpture work. There is still the crude whimsical pre-historic figures, but even these are evolving. Then there is a bronze piece that stands about 150 cms., high. It has an African's illusion to the work of Giocometti. When I pointed this out to him he said something about the Swiss artist being influenced by the Africans. True. We are now coming full circle.  (50x50 cms., acrylic @ 650 to 750 euro; small bronze pieces: 250 to 500 euro; "Dogon woman," 150 cms., high @ 2,500 euro).  Until 4th April.

Arti et Amicitiae (Rokin 112) presents an exhibition titled "The Painter Is A Hero." Yeah, sure, but which one. 3D picked up a sheet of paper at the entrance desk with that title. It list "Ruimte 1, 2, 3 and 4." It gave the names of the artists, titles and sizes, but that was it. On the walls, where the paintings hang, there are no names nor numbers. I assume I could have gone back to the desk and gotten some sort of direction as to how to determine who is who, but that's not my job. I had actually started to take notes when I realized I did not know who I was writing about. There was a wall with 574 small works on paper but, for the life of me, I can't find any of them nor the completed set listed. Hey, folks, this is a good show. Go see it, but ask for a guide dog. http://www.arti.nl/

And now what you have all been waiting for..."The Jerry Springer Rodeo" at Mediamatic BANK (Vijzelstraat 68). What to expect?  Well, the unexpected, of course. MM Bank describes this as a "Rodeo" but what would be more accurate description would be a "pyscho circus." And Jerry is present in the form of two full wall projections of what is maybe the "best of" or the "worst of" clips from his shows. It all depends on your own state of mind on how you view them and him. But other elements of this "happening" highlight the agressiveness of the program. There are paint ball guns available to fire at standing cut-outs of people; and there are chairs stacked up so you can throw them against a wall. Other walls have been painted to reflect the artist feelings?  interpretation? whatever of the man. If you like Jerry Springer or if you loothe Jerry than this is the show for you. If the name Jerry Springer means nothing to you, then the exhibition will be meaningless.

Saturday:

RON MANDOS (Prinsengracht 282) presents Maurice Braspenning (Dutch) who appears to have created a new technique. At first, this new way of doing things looks like a simple gimmick. But after looking at three, four or more examples it grows on you in a favorable way because, well, it works. And if a gimmick works it is no longer a gimmick. What he does is to take a composite board as a canvas; paints it black; then sometimes adds white paint here and there as an outline; then drills holes. The drill becomes a "brush." This last step is the "new technique." Sure, atists have been drilling holes for a long time, but Aerts does it differently. Very differently. The subject matter ranges from woman to man to several bathroom scenes. The latter imagery is actually some of the most interesting pieces. But neither the subject matter nor the imagery is what is important. What is, is the visual aspects which glue both your eyes and your attention to it. A total of six red dots at opening.

Also showing is Michaël Aerts (Belgium) who "has a fascination for 'shifting' realities and symbols." And he does it almost always in b/w though from time to time there is an element of color. The imagery recalls classical subject matters and even what would appear to be book illustrations. It is said that his influences range from the works of Eugene O'Neill to James Whistler and even Cole Porter, the song writer, and the latter in an indirect way. He borrows the shows title, "An O'Neill Drama, A Whistler's Mama," from the song "You're the Top."  Until 10th April. http://www.ronmandos.nl/

Galerie van Bavink (Gelderschkade 58) is showing Peter Blom who is a realist with a tendency to express what he sees with impressionism and/or expressionism. All three of these elements are sometimes present in one piece. He also likes dark colors: black, dark grays and deep maroons. The imgery ranges from portraits to city scapes. This is interesting, the gallery offers both the original painting or a copy of it on canvas using the Giclée technique. Nice idea. (70x50 cms., acrylic @ 750 euro---Giclée print @ 225 euro; 90x70 cms., acrylic @ 1,400 euro---Giclée print @ 375.). Until __?__  www.vriendvanbavink.nl/

Matt Brayans is at Martin van Zomeren (Prinsengracht 282) with a show titled "Hibernation." There are two collages of 64 sections---each section the size of a postcard; and each with the same subject matter, but seen in a slightly different way---making for the one composition. A series of seven circles of various sizes are composed of different types of metal taken from burnt out automobiles and polished. (The "postcards"are a dip-tych in an edition of one, each measures 82x120 cms., @ 6,000 euro; metal objects @ 7,000 euro.)  Until 17th April. http://www.gmvz.com/

At Galerie D. Stigter (Elandsstraat 90) is the work of Rannva Kunyo which presents a show of minimalism at its best! There are eight paintings hanging and each one stands out. Six of them are gray on white. Well, the "gray" looks more like whiffs of tobacco smoke since it is so undefined and ethereal. Of the other two, one is a rose and the other yellow and both on white. The style is conceptual expressionism, but that is really irrelevant. It is the effect that counts. Nice work. (57x69 cms., acrylic on linen @ 2,800 euro; 120x150 cms., acrylic on linen @ 6,00 euro.)  Until 17th April. http://www.dianastigter.nl/

KiKi Lamers is back at Annet Gelink Gallery (Laurierstraat 187) with portraits; and it now seems that every week 3D is talking about the challenge for the contemporary portrait artist. How to do it differently. How to reinvent the style. Lamers has been doing it for some time now. This show is not an exception. The subjects are all young girls, but she captures them in a variety of ways: emotion, the pose or emphasis on the facial abstraction factor. Also, while the paintings are not b/w they might as well be since the colors are all but subliminal.

In The Barkery section of the gallery is a work by Giorgio A. Caló. Well, you can't get much more minimal than this. You walk down the steps and into the small room which is pitch black---3D ran into a few people when he took up position against a wall. Once there, you find yourself looking for something. You squint your eyes and maybe say a little prayer that they have not failed you. Slowly, a dull red image sort of illuminates a spot on the wall. That's it! Actually, 3D stood there for three, four or more minutes looking at it. Transfixed or waiting for something to happen? Don't know. Hmmm. Couldn't find a price list. Until 17th April. http://www.annetgelink.com/

At Galerie Fons Welters (Bloemstraat 140) is the work of a glass sculpture artist Maria Roosen, titled, aptly enough, "BLOW." The glass blowing art is centuries old, but Roosen shows us convincingly that there are areas that have yet to be explored. She is our guide. There is a series, in this show, that concentrates on combining her glass objects with tree limbs and tree trunks. She does it in a variety of ways. Other work is more straight forward like the 30 to 40 clear glass objects hanging from 11 ropes suspended from the ceiling. A very nice piece is a table covered with a number of crochet dollies---all in black---with a red glass flask sitting amongst them. Look closely at the flask and at its base and you will see a smiling face. (39x12x27 cms., glass @ 1,500 euro; 200x30 cms., glass and metal @ 20,000 euro; 100x175x88 cms., fabric, glass and MDF @ 12,000 euro.)

In PLAYSTATION is Jan Wittjes with "I am painter." He paints shoes, people and rooms. The style is sort of representational expressionism. His compositons are sometimes unusual. Also there are a couple of videos. In one, it appears to be a man masterbating with his pants still on. There are sounds that keep a rhythmic beat. You find yourself wishing him luck. The other is more conceptual and more interesting. But, you gotta see it. (30x24 cms., oil on canvas @ 700 euro; 40x30 cms., oil on canvas @ 900 euro.) Until 24th April. http://www.fonswelters.nl/

It looks like a contruction site. This is the view at Upstream (Van Ostadestraat 294) and the man responsible is Izaak Zwartjes. He collects material from Amsterdam's streets. Mostly wood. He constructs an "installation" in his studio and once it is done---there is an organic quality to it---he takes it apart and moves it into a gallery space and puts it all back together again. What saves the imagery from being mundane are various factors from the linear abstraction of the arrangement to the three or four "aliens" that seems to emerge from the litter. One element of the installation could be a contemporary interpretation of Michelangelo's  "Pieta." When 3D pointed this out to the artist he agreed that there were elements that reflected on the classic work. He then described other aspects of the construction as being a "living area," and "a room for professional sex workers," etc. No price list. It is available by section or complete. Until 1st May. http://www.upstreamgallery.nl/

Reflex. 3D was curious about this exhibition by the photographer Miles Aldridge who was interpretated by the painter Chantal Joffe and both were inspired by the model Kristen McMenamy. I arrived at 15 minutes before the opening and was told to come back at 17:00. Well, I was headed into the Joordan for a series of openings. When I completed those, I was biking down the Weterschaans and saw the light still on and about ten people inside. I stopped again. I was told I was too late. It was after 19:00. Oh! Sorry, I don't review shows through the window.

Sunday: Because of an ailment, 3D was forced to take the day off + Monday. Life is hard!

A typically busy week for the Amsterdam art circuit. Expect to see a little of everything as to style, technique and individuality. The crocuses have stuck their tiny blooms above the ground for the first time and the chill in the air has softened considerable. All goods reasons for you to get out of the house and experience Spring Fever. Know what Spring Fever is? It's when the temperature rises enough that 3D sheds his inhibitions and lets it all hang out. Huh?  Well, check out a gallery near you and you'll see it ALL.

Photo: Josien van Barlo standing in the toilet of the Armetis Hotel with a painting of hers. She had been asked to hang one at that location and her first reaction was, "The toilet?" But, then, she thought, "Why not!"  See review on "3D List"
