A new series of paintings with portraits of people by Xavier Yarto

A new series of paintings with portraits of people by Xavier Yarto

Xavier Yarto (1972), now living in San Diego, but originally from Mexico (Villa Coyoacán,  in the south of Mexico City) got famous by his paintings of  Mexico’s pre-Hispanic past. His paintings built a bridge between the ancient Maya art and contemporary abstract painting. His colors are vivid, which made it joyful to look at.

Covid-19, the corona pandemic caused a break in the subject of his painting. One night, when the virus interrupted normal life in a curious and abrupt way, Xavier had sunk into a deep dream. In the dream suddenly paintings appeared in a new style.

The next day when he woke up, he painted his first painting. He felt he had continue, to keep him from stagnating in his painting.

A beautiful volleyball coach

Look at these six paintings, where we successively see a beautiful volleyball coach, a man with a long mustache and his cat, a beautiful parisian girl, a pretty girl with the pigtails and her cat named Keko, a beautiful literature teacher and a selfportrait of the painter, Xavier.

It’s all in lively colors as we are used to.

Don't worry though, the paintings with the theme prehispanic art will still appear in the future. But this new side path yields paintings that look beautiful, refreshing and inspiring. So we hope that Xavier Yarto will not stop doing this for the time being either.
