Going back in time: Daniel Gould’s 3D List, Art in Amsterdam #80

This is the beginning of the 10th year of the 3D List. Perhaps I should be celebrating. But since this news letter is meant to encourage the buying of art there doesn't seem to be much to celebrate. The world's economy crashed back in 2008. The Dutch government, in their infinite wisdom, decided the "cure"  was something called austerity.

Now, six years into that program, there is 8.4% (I have also seen the figure 8%) unemployment (a total of 620,000 people) and automobile sales, for the year, are the worse since 1969; Te Huur signs have multiplied in number like bunny rabbits. It has been reported that in the first six months of this year 1,000 shops have closed in the Netherlands bringing a total of 16,300; that's 7.3% of all shops and up from 6.9% last year. You would have thought that this government-of-austerity would have bitten the dust by now, but, no, they have been reelected, twice, to continue their mutilation of the Dutch economy, social welfare system and cultural programs.

A large handful of art galleries closed last year; some had been in business for as long as 30 years. Felix Meritis closed its doors eliminating an incredibly extensive cultural program that ranged from art to symposiums on world politics, et al. And, wait, there's more, the government is announcing further cuts to take place. Oh, the horror, the horror.

Since writing the previous words, the European Central Bank (ECB) has announced an "easy money" policy. That was over two weeks ago. Unfortunately, it may be too little, too late. There has been a weak demand from banks. And Parliament has announced that the budget deficit will be about 2.3% this year---well below the 3% level limit imposed by the EU. But that is not stopping them from further cuts...well, one area, defence, is demanding more money....

So what should we expect? As Yogi Berra, an American baseball player, for the New York Yankees, in the 50s and 60s, said, "It's tough to make predictions, especially about the future!" You got that right, Yogi!

Iamsterdam...and there are many people from outside of the country who would rejoice in saying it. The Frequent Flyer column, in the International New York Times, has a feature article about an American business man who more often than not is up "in the air." In the article, by C. Taylor, he is asked three questions. Here are two. 1.What is the worst airport in the world? "The one in Atlanta," he says, "It is like an 80s mall." And, "Of all the places you've been, what's the best?" Answer: "Amsterdam. The people, the architecture, the culture are all incredible." He got that right! But, hey, let's keep it that way. Give us back our cultural programs.

MUSEUM REVIEWS:

At "foam" is a huge and comprehensive show of the work of  J. H. Engstrom (Sweden). The man photographs everything. Literally! From the trite to the banal. But even those subjects that fall under those descriptions end up with a dramatic tinge to them.  Look at the man with an injured and partially bandaged hand. We see his hand from the wrist to the finger tips. That's it! Ironically, it takes on an abstract form. How about the waterfall? It looks like a time exposure and the water takes on an imagery of looking like a cloth drape. Several are "portraits"---from street photography to the posed and in both b/w and color. A tire's thread marks, set in soft clay, is, well, rather remarkable. Also included are conceptual photographs that are vague in their imagery. Then there is the gallery room hanging "Sketch of Paris." An it is an incredible overview/survey of the people who make up the city. Pretty portraits? No, not always. In fact some are close to grotesque; then there are those which are "attractive" and/or provocative, erotic, nudes---male and female---interior scenes, night exterior ones, b/w and color. He does it all! More importantly, he does it very well. I asked three staff members of "foam" how may photos are in the exhibition. The first two didn't even hazard a guess. The third said, "About 300." Whew! A lot to look at, but you won't get bored. Until 10th, December. (Footnote: three photos from this exhibiton were published in the Int New York Times (17th Sept. page 2): www.inyt.com

Daniel Gordon shows in the two galleries that face the Keizersgracht. And his work is fun! And very colorful. He makes collages then photographs them or maybe it is all done by PhotoShop. He specializes in still lifes and'"portraits." The former makes you think of Henri Matisse both in composition and color combinations and their abstraction. His "portraits" are reminiscent of Richard Linder, a Pop School artist from the 60s. And, again, it is the abstraction and distortions of the face, of the subject, and its removable from the figurative side of reality that gets your attention. Nice work! Until 2nd November.

"huis marseille museum for photography" (Keizersgracht 401) presents: de Marseillaise: fifteen years of collecting. This is an enormous exhibition of contemporary photograhy; it spands across the world in subject matter. Twenty-nine artists are listed on the invitation and the last name is followed with "e.a/a.o" so the total is anyone's guess. Five artists are feautured. Valerie Belin work is very special whether you are looking at her b/w portraits or a photo of a color cluster of objects on a table....Jacqueline Hassink presents large format color photos of a Japanese forrest and formal gardens. The work not only  stands out  because of its quality but also because of the room in which it hangs. It is an 17th or 18th century space with a painted ceiling and the room's trimmings are painted in a rich and mellow red which complements the greenery, in the photos, perfectly...Naoya Hatakeyama (Japan) does land and sea scape photographs that capture the abstraction of the scene...Sarah Jones shoots subtle b/w photos which are heavy in contrast and her color work is of simple scenes with elegant imagery....Ryan McGinley has 55 examples of his full face portraits, which are closely cropped, and in color. Until 7th December. www.huismarseille.nl

Prince Claus Fund (Herengracht 603)

I reported, on a recent 3D List, that the Prince Claus Fund had turned their ground floor into a true art space. The library is gone (to an upper floor) along with a wall. But that's cosmetics. There is another evolution in the making which complements the new space and that is the exhibitions. They keep getting better and relevant to the culture life of Third World countries.

The first sign of this was the "gay" exhibition featuring South Africans. There was a wall filled with first hand accounts of abuse suffered by South African gays and lesbians. It was pongant, informative, educational and often shocking.

The new show, titled Invisible Borders, is an exceptional photographic exhibition of several African' photographers. We may still refer to Africa as a continent of Third World Nations, but in the case of the photographers, showing here, it shares First World status. They are up there with the best from the west.!

The gound floor features Emeka Okereke, Ray Daniel, Okeugo, Uche Okpa/Iroha, Chris Nowbu, and every photo is a winner. Some are outstanding. The small room, off the gallery, hangs b/w portrait photos by Jid Odukoya and is titled, Nigerians in Libreveille

After viewing these works, take the stairs to the first level and hit the elevator button. Save the physcial effort of climbing the steps and go to the top floor. Once at the top you can watch a slide show of photographs by E.O. Kereke. You will see scenes of villages, street people, African' landscapes, and city scapes. When you decend the stairs your atttention immediately goes to an unusual wall painting. Is it symbolic of the African' story on slavery? An African man straddles a tall ship and  the right and left walls, which frames the work, has a paragraph of script. However, it is an homage to Leonardo Da Vince's mirror writing and is difficult to read. The artist is Breeze Yoko.

To quote from the invitation: It is "road trips across dozens of countries to connect communities and promote creative exchange." And it does do that!

You gotta see this exhibition! Your view of Africa will never be the same. Until 19th December. www.princeclausfund.org

Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam (SMBA)

Nice artists are showing at SMBA (Rozenstraat 59). The show's title is, "This is the Time. This is the Record of the Time," curated by Angela Harutyunyan and Nat Miller. The exhibition will travel later to the American Univeristry of Beirut Art Gallery in March, 2015. Also, the show at SMBA is accompanied by a series of artist' talks and performances, a screening program and a symposium.

Kristina Benjocki (Serbia) does woven wool tapersties. Some with subtle designs and others with typography. One example is a "dip-tych," but instead of two pieces side-by-side they overlap and with about 50 cms., between the other....Priscila Fermandes (Portugal) makes an inkjet print from a hand painted large format negative. And the colors will stop you in your tracks! They are truly vibrant....Daniele Genadry (USA/Leabanon) has both an unique style and unusual painting technique. The emphasis is not on the imagery but on light and compostion. A large painting appears to be a work in progress. Nice!...Minimal art at its most minimal is the best way to describe the work of Rayyane Tabet (Lebanon). Starting at the entrance room and continuing into the main gallery space are hatch marks. That is those five slashes that prisoners use to count the days; or regular people use to count people entering an exhibition. How many are there? 3D is still counting and wondering if they will earse or paint over them at the end of the show. One of arts little mysteries.

Other artists in the show are: Sebastian Diaz Morales, Peter Fengler, Walid Sadek, Esme Valk and Cynthia Zaven. Until 9th November. Don't forget to check for special programs on the 30th and 31st of October; 1st November; and 2nd November at: www.smba.nl

RESTAURANT REVIEWS:

Miss Saigon, Vietnamese cuisine, Bilderdijkstraat 208, www.misssaigonamsterdam.nl

It was about 25+ years ago that the first Vietnamese restaurant opened in Amsterdam. And, slowly, very slowly, others followed until it became a avalanche and, now, every neighborhood in the city has at least one and more often then not, several. No complaints.

My palette for Vietnamese cuisine is not that refined though I do have very good knowledge of the Chinese, Indonesian and Japanese tables. Vietnamese does resemble Chinese in several ways---ingredients and cooking technique---but it had been a French colony since the 19th century and there are subtle influences from that source.

A new Vietnamese restaurant, Miss Saigon (Bilderdijkstraat 208), has been promoting itself aggressively with special nights and menus and at an attractive price of 20 euro for a six course meal (beverages extra).

I decided to check it out. The first course was soup, Canh chua tom, which was a flavorable broth with a pinapple hit and lots of tauge and a few shrimp. It had a nice punchant bite to it. That was followed by a wrap stuffed with tauge, cucumber, noddles, herbs, carrots, and duck with a rice wrap and two sauces. I wanted more.

We were then served  breaded deep fried chicken wings, Goi cuon thit ga. Tasty! However, a sauce would have been a nice aside. A very unusual dish followed. It was a pancake, slightly sweet, stuffed with carrot' slivers, tauge and sliced small green peppers. Sorry, forgot to ask the name and there are 42 appetizers listed on the menu. Couldn't find it.

The rice dishes were already being anticipated with watering mouths. There were three. The first was one with green, red and yellow peppers and onion in a slightly spicy sauce. And there was fish fried perfectly with a mild spicy sauce. The next was fried tofu with yellow and red peppers, onions and zuccinni with a mild sauce. The last menu serving was beef with onions and mushrooms and a thick soy sauce.

Again, the place was too busy to ask the wait-person the names of the dishes so I decided to check the menu later for their names. Opps. There are 54 entrees listed. Happy menu exploring! Entrees range in price from 12,95 to 18,50. The proportions are generous.

Dessert? Nearly forgot! Your choice of coconut pudding or vanalia ice cream with black sesame seeds. It was a nice finale. There is a wine list and the beer list includes Saigon which is brewed and botled in Vietnam. www.misssaigonamsterdam.nl

On the Kinkerstraat (#56, corner of De Costakade) is a new "snack bar" called "jacketz." It does not have the traditional Dutch snack bar menu. It is hightly specialized by offering potatoes and I don't mean friets. Forget about it! They don't have them. The potato is the Jacketz which is a Dutch variety and looks as if it weighs bewteen 400-500 grams. It is baked and then "seasoned with olive oil and creme fraiche in a crispy crust with flakes of sea salt." Then the fun begins. You get to choose your filling: beet salad, veggies in season, tuna salad, salmon in fresh herb curd (quark), chicken salad, chili con carne, pulled pork in whiskey maple sauce. And you can add to any of those recipes things like bacon, pecorino, goat cheese, mixed nuts, dukkah---a nut/spice mix with hazelnuts and pistachios and different spices like sesame and cumin---and a "perfect sauce:" garlic, tartare, pepper, honey mustard, pesto or hummus. I was at the opening and had the veggie combination...damn, it was good! (price range 2.50 to 7.00 euro), extras at 75 to 95 cents; sauces, 95 cents. Salads also available and soup coming soon. www.jacketz.nl

3D was biking down the Ferdinand Bolstraat (143) when I spotted a hole-in-the-wall eating establishment called, OMELEGGS. Something got my attention. So I stopped and went inside the place and asked for a menu. What a nice surprise I was in for. It listed 22 varieties of Omeleggs (omelets). And you can get things you never expected to find in an omelet. There is the "banana, peanut butter, honey and cinnamon" one; another with "dates, walnuts, honey, and cinnamon." And then there is the "add on" list which includes: onions, bracolli, chipolate, smoked salmon and five different cheeses. Want a case of heart burn? This might do it: Gourmet Chicken Burger with a fried egg, pickle, onion, tomato, spinach, cheese and chips of the side (7.50 euro). Also, an "all day breakfast." You order as much as you want within an hour. Choosing from a boiled egg, ham, salami, cheese, mozzarella, yogurt + museli and bread. And for 5.90 euro you can create your own egg dish starting from eggs that are suuny side up to scrambled or just cooked with egg white. Again, several add ons like onions (50 cents) brocolli (50 cents), Smoked Salmon (one euro) and five cheeses from 50 cents to one euro. I wasn't hungry so I didn't try anything, but I can't wait to do so. There is something about the place that gives off good vibes....Ten days later, I did return and walked into a packed restaurant (a Sunday) with more people sitting at tables outside. There were three empty seats, but not for long. I ordered the "Triple Cheese Omelet" (garganzola, feta, mozzerala) @ 7.95. There was a choice of corn bread---not the American traditional cake-like style, but the bread-type---or brown bread. A large coffee was 2.95. The latter was a rich espresso. The omelet was anything but the Dutch style which is flat and sorta lifeless. This had good body and fluff. Light in taste; and very good! And there is more to explore. Are you a layout/graphic artist? If so you will like the wood menu board with the lasered typography. www.omelegg.com

WHAT YOU HAVE MISSED...But, there is still time....(scroll down for weekly update)

There is a new art space in Amsterdam and it is located in a large basement at the Art 'Otel [sic] (Martelaarsgracht 5, across from CS). The first exhibition was curated by Rob Malasch and he has taken the opportunity to feature "Young Talents-The Best of the Rest." The artists come from a variety of Dutch art academies and you can expect painting, sculpture, objects, furniture new jewelry and much more. The artists represented are: Sven Hulsbergen Henning(design), Suus Groenleer (light boxes), Misato Unno (jewlery), Inup Park (ceramic scultpure), Lennart van Dueren den Holander (design, furniture), Sharieta Berghuis (photography), and Martijn de Boer (design). More info at: www.artotels.com/amsterdam. Until 15th September. Sorry, you are too late. For more info, contact: Anuschka Tijn at: atjin@pphe.com or Rob Malasch at: rmalasch@gmail.com

The Restaurant: While you are there, check out the dining area called "5&33." The menu looked interesting and the prices resonable. Example: Braised Ox Cheeks, mashed potatoes & wild mushrooms @ 10 euro; Cod, broad beans, girolles, mushrooms @ 10 euro. And if the hapjes, that were served at the opening, are any indication, the food is GOOD! Also, there are 19 varieties of wine available by the glass. 3D checked out the website https://bit.ly/2xIMfMT         which rated it at 8.7 on a 10 point  scale. https://www.5and33.nl/        To see photos of the restaurant and set tables see:    https://www.5and33.nl/

Another new art space is KUNSTCENTRUM Gallery (2e Weteringdwarstraat 33B) which comes to Amsterdam from Zaandam. And right off you see something fishy going on. In the window of the space is a collection of ceramic fish. Hey, you say, seen it! Well, no, Edith Madou does it differently and in several unique ways. Some of the concepts are just plain fun to look at. In fact, the examples are better classified as objects more so than ceramic art. 3D especially liked the two fish between two slices of bread. Cute! (125 to 950 euro). Harold Aspers shows three portraits of Geisha and one Anne Frank. What stands out is his technique. He paints portraits in acrylic and covers it with a resin. Somehow he addscrackling which is what you see in paintings from previous centuries. (100x100 cms., @ 2,960 euro)...Also on display is CLIC Dutch Design Jewelry. Simple, streamlined and elegant rings, necklaces and earrings. (49 to 148 euro). And there is more... Until 30th September. www.kunstcentrum.nl

...And still another new gallery, sorta. The original owners of Jaski Gallery were  Nico Koster and Tom Okker. The latter's son has opened Okker Art Gallery (Vijzelstraat 125). The gallery will feature work from the COBRA school---Appel and Lucebert are now hanging---but the emphasis will be on Dutch contemporary artists. Showing now is the recent work of Kees Salentijn. 3D would describe him as a contemporary impressionist. His work is very, very colorful. Much more so than his earlier work. The subject matter in this show ranges from a village scene to a day at the beach. One work that stands out is an acrylic with 150+ "faces" staring out at you. (900 to 4,995 euro.) Showing, too, is Bastian Kijzens who is a phtographer. He does both analog and digital (PhotoShop). One of the two works hanging is a digital photograph that consists of 500 photos that have been merged into one image. The other is an early work from 1999. It is less complicated but its technique is still a comlex one. We see a mushroom that in nature stand a few centemeters above the ground. Here it looks monumental and the layered collage-photo background highlights the forground perfectly. (143x112 cms., photo, Lambda on dibond, Ed 5 @ 2,675 euro; 122x233 cms., same technique, Ed 5 @ 3,250 euro). www.okkerartgallery.com

At Gallery RA, the place for new jewelry, is an exhibition for two artists. Frieda Doerrer makes unusual necklaces with blackened bronze. Several pieces look like a woman's small purse with a long shoulder strap but in the dimunative. What is amazing is she uses her material in such a way that sometimes you are sure it is made with silver, gold or platnium. She also does rings. (660 to 2,640 euro)...Julian Steimas takes several pages from Gerrit Reitveld's school of design. He makes stainless steel brooches which are reminiscent of Reitveld's rectancular cabinets; some are with color, white, gray or yellow. Nice! (300-880). Until 8th November. www.galerie-ra.nl

...And just around the corner at Galerie Mokum (OZ Voorburgwal 334) is a show for two realistic painters. Beneden Erkin does beautiful realistic style paintings. Basically, each one is a still life, but the objects featured tend to be 19th century Chinese bowls. A few do have a touch of fruit. A painting featuring Chinese tiles and a textile covered box stands out. (7,600 to 31,500 euro)....JanMaris does realism with a subtle touch of impressionistic technnique. From a distance of two or three meters they look as if they could be photos except for an almost subliminal perceived depth. That's where the impressionistic element comes in. The subject matter reflects the 19th century academic school featuring fountains, sculpture work, interiors and exterior scenes. Don't miss the endearing homage to Johannes Vermeer. FOUR RED DOTS at opening. (505 to 5,750 euro) Until 12th Ocotber.  www.galeriemokum.com

An exhibition that opened in early August continues through 1st October at Vassie (Langestraat 47). The photogrpher is Christopher Bucklow who incorporates elements of astronomy, chemistry and alchemy and uses the 19th century technique of pin-hole photography to incorporate all the elements. The result is almost like an illustionist's version of the portrait. The figurative form is all there but the rest is either empty---except for color---or the result of a pontillist using one color but with a vareity of shades and, actually, the imagery is the sun. That big bright orb up in the sky. Each photo is unique. No copies. No editions. The pin-hole cameras Bucklow uses range from the size of a big box to the size of a building. (3,600 to 13,500 euro)  Until 1st October. www.galleryvassie.com

At Percipi Platform voor Kunst (Rozenstraat 227) is hanging the painted work of Martijn Couwenhoven whose style brings to mind the early work of W. Kandinski. There is that almost chaotic arragement of abstract forms. However, his colors are basically subdued. The primary colors of red, blue and yellow are not present. Expect to see earth colors and a loose abstract lyricism that flows with the visual. (45x45 cms., acrylic on linen, 375 euro; 100x80 cms., acrylic on linen @ 1,250 euro; 200x300 cms., egg tempera and acrylic on linen @ 6,500 euro). Until 28th September.

N.B. There is a finissage, on the 28th, that includes a program of a film about the artist by Per Kirkeby and a three course dinner, inclusive wine and water, at 20 euro. To reserve: info@percipi.nlhttps://bit.ly/2xrBKhW

At MLB (Witte de Withstraat 32) are two photographers. Anna-Maria Magnusson is a photographer that really doesn't have any specialities when it comes to subject matter. She does portrait photography and other work that could be classified as conceptual. Examples in both b/w and color are hanging. One b/w photo of an automobile tire in snow stands-out. And it is available in two sizes as are most works in the show. (20x30 cms., Ed. 10 @ 200 euro; 70x50 cms., Ed 10 @ 450 euro)....Berber Oostenbrug does color photos and employees PhotoShop to achieve interesting effects. The subject matter is a dichotomy of ethnicticity: A young and blond woman, in a Geisha, with backgrounds that are obviously Dutch. She uses herself or her younger sister as models. A few of the works, according to the artist are artist's "jokes." That is, a portrait which is "framed" in the Delft Blue tradition. (41x27 cms., Ed 10 @ 400 euro; 55x40 cms., Ed 10 @ 600) Until 28th September. www.mlbgalerie.nl

VOUS ETES ICI (NDSM-werf, Ms. Van Riemsdijkweg 41) kicks off their new season with TWO group shows. One of the shows is sponsored by Hafemann International Projects. In a small gallery you will see five artists: Benno Mutter, Burkard Blumlein, Hans-Peter Webel, Silvia Beck and PereVeneman. Their techniques range from prints, pencil on paper, textile, sculpture work and an object. (1,200 to 9,500 euro and every price inbetween)....The main gallery also shows five artists: Lennek van der Goot, Maria Rappard, Koen Tas, Levi van Veluw and Thijs Zweers. And some of the work is either unique in style or unusual. Unfortunately,  there are NO name tags nor is there a price list. This seems to be a new bad habit for this gallery. Pity! One artist does a very busy Cy Twombly-like drawing and another artist displays a drawing as a scroll similar to the Torah. The dark, dark charcoal drawings also stand out. No closing date for either shows posted. Life is hard! https://bit.ly/2vwApoe

...And directly next door is Michiel Voet at the Nieuw Dakota with photogrpahs. He presents us with an interesting theme and story. He worked with Mohammed [Karim Ramtain] who is his subject in The Invisible Man title. He is an immigrant who has lived in north Amsterdam for 20+ years. Being "illegal" forces him "underground." But that's another story. Voet work closely with him to create conceptual and/or metaphysical scenes that directly and indirectly reflect Mohammed's status. This form the press release: "Voet's images, shot head-on with the staged precision and sensibilites of fashion photography show a man hidden in plain sight. We never see Mohammed's face, His limbs emerge from cabinets and upholstery; his face is obscured by a mask, clothing, blankets...." Expect the unusual. Opps!!! 3D attended the finnesage. Sorry about that! www.nieuwdakota.com

At "GALERIE bart" (Elandsgracht 16) is a solo exhibition for Yvonne Lacet who does geometric/abstraction  in collage form then photographs the imagery. Her forms are unusual and conceptual. The piece used for the invitation card is very colorful and intriguing as the imagery evolves from colored squares to what look like watercolor strokes. (Polaroid, unique @ 150 euro; 26x32 cms., Photograph, Ed 4 @ 450 euro; 100x140 cms., Photo, Ed 4 @ 3,500 euro) Until 18th October. www.galeriebart.nl

More photography can be seen a Eduard Planting Gallery (1e Bloemdwarstraat 2). It is the work of Marie-Jeanne van Hovell tot Westerflier who takes us into the interiors of Amsterdam's Grand Canal houses. She captures, in beautiful b/w, interiors of such places as Van Brienen, Van Loon and Willet-Holthuysen. What makes the photos so spectacular is her focus on the little things that we give so littel thought to when we them before our eyes. A chair, from a few hundred years ago, becomes a part of an abstraction. A stairwell, lighted by the late afternoon sun, is filled with brilliant b/w contrast. (Each photo is available in two sizes: 16x16 cms., Ed 50 @ 200 euro; 28x28 cms., ED 10 @ 1,250 euro; 40x40 cms., or 60x60 cms. Ed. 5 @ 1,650 and 2,550 euro, repectively.) The ceramic gallery, De Witte Voet (Kerkstraat 135) shows Christian Wisse who does ceramic "portraits." Well, they are not really portraits, but a visual rendering that resembles the human face and according to the press release,  "...larger-than-life ceramic heads, faces that lie just beneath the surface of vision. Melancholy expressions, contorted faces and those that stare in a serene silence...." 3D couldn't have said it better. I would add that sometimes it seems you are looking into the face of a circus clown. Good work! (900-1,500 euro) Until 11 October. https://bit.ly/2NSLxnD

WALLS (Prinsengracht 737) is hanging the work of Martine Johanna who was previously a fashion dsigner. But she needed a change and now says, "I seek liberation in my work!" Indeed, she paints figuratively and portrait-like works. The style is some where between realism and comic strip art. Simple, but it's all there. She has an excellent sense of color and there is often a playfullness that is endearing. (Prints, Ed. 30 @ 100 euro; 10x30 cms., @ 300 euro; 50x60 cms., @ 1,200 euro; 170x120 cms., @ 4,000, acrylic on linen or on wood) Until __?__. https://bit.ly/2LRAexM

Ronald Zuurmond looks at the darker side of life with his show at BORZO (Keizersgracht 516). But, hey, don't let that hold you back. Sometmes it is nearly impossible to put an artist's work into an easily visualized category. This is one such case. There is an almost primitive, if not naive, approach to the imagery. However, several factors indicate the painting was done with  sure brush-strokes. That is, how the paint is applied to the canvas, the compostion and, finally, his ability to make a dark and almost grotesque image accessable. The work titled Ritsje may well qualify as a contemporary masterpiece (150x120 cms., oil on canvas @ 9,500 euro). Several works are collages. However, the tehnique is not in a traditionial collage methedology. First, he paints the figure on canvas, cuts it out and applies it to still another canvas and makes further collage addtions. 5 RED DOTS at opening. (75x55 cms., oil/collage on paper @ 1,900 euro; 35x25 cms., oil on canvas @ 2,100 euro; 80x80 cms., oil on canvas @ 5,600 euro) Until 27th September. www.borzo.com

Gallery Ron Mandos (Prinsengract 282) begins his new season in a newly renovated space with a solo show for Isaac Julien and his photogrpahy. His work is very professional in that he captures banal imagery sometimes in spectacular ways. All the work is in color. The "theme" is centered on an Oriental lady who appears to be touring Dubia. A film of 67 minutes is also featured. (90 cms., diameter Ed 6 @ 10,000 euro; 160x240 cms., Ed. 6 @ 35,000 euro) Until 10th October. www.ronmandos.nl

...And just around another corner, from the above, is "witzenhausen GALLERY" (Hazenstraat 60) with paintings by Raphaelle Ricol (France). His works have several elements that reflect expressionism to realism though the latter tends to have a surrealistic tinge to it. And he has humor. Sometimes it could be described as ironic like the golfer in the process of swinging his club which will connect the golf club to a skateboard with a small child riding it. There is a trip-tych which uses contrast not only in colors but in its symbols. (53x47 cms., @ 3,000 euro; 100x81 cms., @ 6,000 euro; 2xs 162x130 cms., plus 195x114 cms., @ 20,000 euro) Until 11th Ocotber. https://bit.ly/2zCqZwM

...And a little further down the street brings us to the Stigter van Doesburg Gallery (Elansdstraat 90) which is showing two artists. Elspeth Diederix does exceptional conceptual photography. Most works have a background which only hints at having color. A few photos are captivating. (80x51 cms., Photo, Ed 15 @ 3,500 euro; 120x80 cms., C-print @ 5,000 euro)....In the small back gallery is the work of S. L. Martinez who is a conceptual painter. Each work hanging looks like the back of a stretched canvas then painted in a monochromatic color. There is an "installation" consisting of a crate with six wine bottles which is connected to an exhaust-like PVC pipe.(30x24 cms., acrylic on soft board on canvas @ 950 euro.) ...And a few more steps beyond is Martin van Zomeren (Hazenstraat 20) with Anne de Vries conceptual sculpture work that utilizes sand/clay with common city' ditritus that seems to have accumulated on the surface. She adds plastic tubing---colored or filled with a colored liquid. The tubing is arranged in several conceivable configurations. Two hanging works are also conceptual but in a figurative way, sorta. You gotta see them. (3,000 to 7,000 euro) Until 4th October. www.gmvz.com

...And across the bridge at the Lauriergracht, turn right and walk to # 94 and you arrive at TORCH. And without any hyperbole it is an ALL STAR SHOW! There are nearly 50 artists showing. They have all shown at the gallery sometime during the last 30 years and are part of A GRAND SALON for the 30th anniversary show. And what an incredible range of styles and techniques. From realistic, to figurative, conceptual even the Pop School, tapestry work, well, you name it you'll see it here. (from 450 euro to "price on request") Until 11th October. https://bit.ly/2L7qYSK

...And continue on the Lauriergracht to #80 and the Rento Brattinga Galerie for a retrospective exhibition for Armando's drawings, 50 years worth, 1955-2008. The b/w piece from 1955 has many elements found in the COBRA group, at the time. A work from 1958 is reminiscent of Cy Twombly. But most work is of a conceptualistic and minimalistic nature. They are his static line drawings with their unusual compostions and works where is is difficult to see a focal point. Check out the trip-tych with photo. Cool! If you are a fan of Armando, don't mis this show. (3,180 euro to 23,500 euro) Until 11th Ocotber. www.rentobrattinga.com

The show is best described---if any description could do it justice--as conceptual studies in sculpture and objects. What will you see? Hmmm...I guess I could explain, or try, but it would take time and space. If you like the unusual, see this show by all means. Until 4th October. www.fonswelters.nl

Qlick Editions (Gerard Doustraat 134) is hanging the work of Kylli Sparre (Estonia). She studied ballet with the intention of becomng a professional. But the lessons didn't take and she lost interest but still had a strong desire to do something creative. She discovered photography and discovered  that she had not only a strong attraction for it, but a natural feel for expressing herself with a lens. In this show we see the results of her exploration into the art of photogrpahy. Ironically, ballet---the art of its movement---plays a role in her photographic voice. She doesn't photograph dancers but women in long formal dresses that have motion. That motion is sometimes natural and sometimes surreal. The women portrayed are all in a nature environment. In one, a lady appears to be walking on water. The photo in the gallery's window features a lady whose long hair appears not only to extend across the background landscape but merge into it. She prints on a heavy paper. The paper doesn't absorb the color ink pigmentations thus creating an illusion of being a pastel drawing. The prices are very friendly for work of this quality. But that fits with the raison de etre of the gallery: To Bring quality photography to young and/or beginning collector. (30x30 cms., print, ed. 15 @ 250 euro; 70x70 cms., Hahnemuller William Turner paper, Dibond, Ed 10 @ 800 euro; 150x100 cms., Hahnemulhe William Turner, Dibond + baklist Ed 5 @1,550 euro) Until 1st November. www.qlickeditions.com

Ramaz Goiati is at Angle Gallery Amsterdam (Weteringschans 207) with objects and insallations. There is a collection of "dirty snowballs"---anyway, that's what they look like. He takes ordinary black soil and mixes that with a binder and molds them in irregaular circular shapes like you do a snowball. There are four aluminium (26x21 cms.) wall objects with imagery looking like the outside of a house---don't miss the one with someone's arm reaching through the slightly opened door with a trash bag in hand. The installation is all in black and is chaotically arranged on the floor with it own flourescent lighting. When I looked at the price list I saw that the floor installation was actually in three individual sections. (1,250 to 1,400 euro) Until 11th October. www.anglegallery.nl

Gerhard Hofland (Bilderdijkstraat 165) presents Johan Tahon. And the word "presents" is indeed aprapos. He creates monumental figurative sculptures. The center piece in the show is four meters high. His style is unusual. Certainly, it is almost realistic and there are Giocometti-like touches in his elongated style. A series of four heads are identical in form but each has a nuance of gray paint which appears to have been poured over the imagery. THREE RED DOTS at opening. A very special show to see is at BMB (Kerkstraat 129). It hangs 19 works (plus 10 more in stock) from the collection of Rene Marti. He is also the owener of the gallery. In addition, he is the person reasonsilbe for the AMC' hospitals outstanding collection. His own personal collection consists of about 250 works. It is a eclectic grouping of late 20th century artists and the styles range from figurative to geometric/abstraction to the conceptual. Artists' works to look for: Diego Moya's abstract with an unusal compostion is nice (95x100 cms., @ 1,500 euro; mixed media/linen); Walter Libuda and his sort of marriage of the COBRA school and Freimjuth, (185x60 cms., oil 1997 @ 15,000 euro)....Lee Quinones reflects the styles of the strip comic artist to that of graffiti artist. (146x125 cms., 1982 @ 5,000 euro); Bruno Csccoballi's does mixed media/wood work which is both a sculpture and object. Very nice, too. (48x93 cms., @ 5,000 euro) The time period of the hanging work is from 1979 (a Sam Francis gouache in many shades of blue) to Cornelia Schleime large paitning from 2001. Until 21st Febuary 2015. At KochxBos (1e Anjeliersdwarstraat 36) Harma Heikens exhibits lots of humor in her work and says, "Mind you, the fun of it all isn't lost on me."  A statue of a young woman, in a cloak, with a cone shaped hood, holds a sign which reads "God hates us all." On the floor, of the gallery, is a 150 cms., high "hot dog" in human form: eyes, nose, mouth, hands legs, et al and please hold the mustard. The hot dog is holding an unattached dog leech for a pit bull. The dog is standing over a invicerated female animal .Whew! Oh, yeah, the pit bull seems to have an erect penis for a tail. Did I say she has humor? And there is more eroticism like the female with the body of a woman and the head of a rabbit munching on a disconnected penis. A wall sculpture is made from a Good Year black tire which is ringed in orange/yellow flames and that is topped with clusters of gray/black puffs of smoke.

The gallery has printed an 144 page catalog, Sculptures, which is a stunning work. High quality paper and superb reproductions. The price is 35 euro and considering that the first printing is only 350 copies, it is priced very reasonably.

(800 euro, 5,000 euro; 11,000 euro and 15,000 euro) Until 25th Ocotber. www.kochxbos.com

Sometimes the act of buying art for the true colletor can be frustrating. This came to mind at the exhibition for Annemarie van Haeringen at WGKUNST (M. van Bouwdijk Bastiaansestraat 28). At one point, I asked to see the price list but was told there was none, "Nothing is for sale...Except the books." Indeed, the artist illustrate children's books. There are eleven on display and for sale (7.50 to 15 euro). She hangs "about 100" line drawings, nearly all in color; and hanging from the ceiling there are "about 200" cut-outs of symbols, typography, animals, houses, you name it....

The drawings are grouped according to the book they illustrated, therefore each grouping has a theme. Some are almost surreal and/or conceptual. One group of six drawings features a lady with hair like Rapunzel. And atop the drawings is a several meters long braided stretch of hair. She is both a minimalist and does scenes with more devloped imagery. The subject matter ranges from people to a variety of animals. An there is humor. In one, a bare breasted woman is leaping for glee as she sheeds her suffocating corsett; directly to the left, is a woman making hats. Lots of hats. 3D likes hats. Again, nothing is for sale. Pity! That's our loss. Until 9th November. www.wgkunst.nl

ADDED: 28th September.

There is a group show at FONTANA GALLERY (Lauriergracht 11) with the young photographer, Max Kraanen, featured. He presents landscapes which are mysterious because of their vagueness and slightly out-of-focus imagery. Call it an undefined reality. (40x50 cms., inkjet printed on Canson paper, mounted on dibond, Ed 5 @500; same work at 100x125 cms., Ed 3 @ 1,500 euro)...Six other artists are showing with as many styles as artists. And another new gallery for Amsterdam. Villa del Arte (Nieuwe Spiegelstraat 38) is the A'dam branch of a Barcelona gallery of the same name. The first show is for Fernando Alday (Spain)who does large size collages. But before you say, "Ho-Hum!" let me say he does them differently. If you like maps, topography and typography don't miss this impressive work. He uses the covers of 19th century books and hand-written letters from the same century to form the imagey. Using the same technique he also fashions "heads." Nice! (35x35 cms., mixed media @ 750 euro; 114x195 cms., mixed media @ 7,500 euro) Until 26th October. www.villadelarte.com

Peter Anton is at Gallery Delaive (Spiegelgracht 23) with fun work! You know those fancy boxes that bon-bons are sold in? Some are shaped like hearts. There is always a selection of candy' types. He does the same type of box but hugely oversized---50x50 cms., up to 100x100 cms. He features a variety of sweets and emphasizes color variations; an example of the  humor is a chocolate covered cherry that someone has taken from it a bite. The work is visually titillatingl. That is, it makes you want to sample something. 3 RED DOTS at opening. No price list available. Until __?__ www.gallerydelaive.com

Galerie Lieve Hemel (Nieuwe Spiegelstraat 3) opens their season with the work of Alexandra Klimas who does cows. Good ol' Dutch b/w Holsteins .She somehow makes them look dramatic as if posed for a formal "portrait." Neat trick when you are dealing with milk-juicers. Her style is realistic, however when you get your nose to the canvas you will see the brush strokes of an impressionionist. (1,250, 2,200, 5,200 to 7,800 euro) 3 RED DOTS, at opening. Until 25th October. www.lievehemel.nl

Tessar Lo (Can/Indonesia) has returned again to JASKI (Nieuwe Spiegelstraat 29). I think this is his third exhibition. He does quirky and sometimes comical work. The style is COBRA with elements of graffiti, strip art and his own magical touches. All the work is mixed media; and don't miss the 20 small colored drawings. 3 RED DOTS (21x16 cms., mixed med @ 1,250 euro; 50x40 cms., mixed media on canvas @ 2,200 euro; 130x105 cms., mixed media on canvas @ 3,800) Until 12th Ocotber. www.jaski.nl

However, there is one exception and that's Stef van der Byl who is a designer working with recyled objects like a old saxaphone, a high powered drill and a surgeon's operating light. All have been fashioned into contemporary lighting. (950-7,000 euro)...Featured is the work of Daanoe who does room interiors. Some have been beautifully preserved or lovingly restored; and others are in a natural evolution of decay. There are striking not only because of the spaces but the quality of the work and its contrast. (50x60 cms., photo/epoxy, Ed 18  @ 900 euro; 200x120 cms., photo/epoxy Ed 8 @ 3,300 euro)...Billy & Hells are back. There are four photos that differ from their regular style. Each features a lady and is slightly out-of-focus lending mystery to. (200x120 cms., Photo, Ed 5 @ 5,400 euro)... Michael Parkes (Spain/USA) has been showing in A'dam for over 30 years. His style never varies only the imagery. This show feautres lithos on paper and his bronze work. His works are precise illustrations but with a surreal element. He likes pretty ladies with swans. And his bronze work closely reflects his works on paper and canvas. (60x50 cms., litho, Ed 50 @ 2,000 euro; Bronze, 6,500 to 11,200 euro. I suspect that the bronzes are from an edition)...In the small back gallery there are four oils on linen by Menunan. He has both an unusual style and approach. Call it figurative conceptualism. There is a "sweetness" to the scenes developed around young women. Wonderful colors and each is nicely framed with some unique nuances. VONDELCS (Vondel Park, nee former Film Museum) is now sponsoring art exhibitons. The current show is by Jet Nijkamp with her drawings and a video inspired by the Park. She captures the leaning tree and Picasso's huge sculpture piece beautifully. But in keeping with the season, the work is in browns and ochres. There is a vagueness to the imagery that highlights the composition. The video is with sound (it wasn't on at the opening) and focuses on certain elements of the park and is visually attractive with an almost subliminal 3D effect. Until 12th October.

At the Original Dampkring Gallery (Singel 395) is the work of MORCKY (Italy). He draws, paints and makes videos...Oh, I forgot, there are two graphic novels, on display, as well. His emphasis is on the geometric perspective. He looks at forms---circular, rectangular and the square---and they appear to be emerging from the ground and projecting dramatically upward. The illusion has a sense of agreesiveness. In one series, of four, he goes from simple to highly complex configurations. The work on canvas reflects the drawings in imagery but there is more depth because he works in both pencil and acrylic paint; it is essentially a b/w compositon. The video is like one of his drawings/paintings in motion; the building process. He also has produced two graphic novels---each without text. The layout is exceptional and the typography unusual. Insideout, with a press run of 500 copies, hardbound, is 19 euro; Dayandnight is a paperback, with a press run of 1,000, and priced at 14 euro. (50x50 cms., ink on paper with frame @ 500 euro; 50x50 cms., 4 times, ink on paper @ 2,500 euro; 80x130 cms., acrylic and pencil @ 1,800 euro). Until 26th October. https://bit.ly/2xvDiYd

Alphons Freijmuth is hanging new work at Galerie Clement (Prinsengracht 834). For the most part it is the Freijmuth that's familiar; and you either like him or you don't. There are a couple of works that appear to interject a new type of imagery especially in their compostion and in his adding linear nuances. Also, wood sculptures in crude almost abstract forms. Two geometric/abstract wall pieces, in wood, are nice. (76.5x57.5 cms., maroufle @ 3,250 euro; 180x18x18 cms., wood sculpture @ 4,950 euro; 160x150 cms., acrylic on canvas @ 13,200 euro) Until 25th Ocotber.

...Hey, another new gallery...Galerie Oranjerie (Lijnbaansgracht 307) is exhibiting Charlotte Schrameijer who has two distinct styles and technniques. On an ordinary---and stretched---canvas, she paints abstract works that incorporates various tehniques. She sometimes adds fiber to the surface. And while abstract, there is a haunting feel of a water pond which is very vague and undefined. Some have lots of colors and a few are in several shades of one color. Her other style/technique is to paint a scene with trees, birds, umbreallas, whatnots, then she cuts out the primary imagery and hangs them with pins projecting about four cms., from the wall. The resulting shadow, on the wall, adds deminision. (650 to 3,350 euro). Until 1st November. https://bit.ly/2MRWYdz

Ksenia Galiaeva is exhibiting at Bradwolff Projects (Oetewalerstraat 73) as a slection by guest curatior Alex de Vries. She is a photogrpaher and she is into shadows. And it works! But it is nearly an abstraction because the line is set amongst trees; the shadow from the tree makes the work both mysterious and a bit eerie.
